I so understand all those conflicting emotions — the irritation, the tenderness, the tricky history all rolled into one. Wishing you a fabulous bonfire when it comes
Jo! This essay is so good. I love the way you, circle around your relationship with the house with your mother. And as Fifi said, burn, baby burn indeed.
And oh my God, thank you for the gift of Maw Maw!!
Thanks for this one Jo. I can relate in so many ways. Mother wrangling. My final bit will be just sending all the junk to the op shop - without curating out any thing that she deemed valuable, and everything else as well.
I'm going to read it. It's such a coincidence - I was reading a Joan Collins memoir recently and she was saying how she (Joan) had an affair with Cloris' husband, and when they were having a tryst Cloris would come and hammer on the door, screaming at them. Only last week I was thinking I might do a piece on Young Fankenstein one day, and whenever I think of that film the first two faces that spring to mind are hers and Marty Feldman's. She's an original.

Tracey there is a service that comes to the house and takes everything! You don't even have to box it up!
Thank you for the therapy. And for the video!!
Cloris Leachman was a special kind of actress whom I met while watching The Mary Tyler Moore show. A real legend!
Fabulous in "Young Frankenstein". A rare manic quality that is a joy to behold.
Her bio is incredible!

Burn, baby, burn. I am learning from your courage, for which, thank you. The Maw Maw is priceless.
Thank you. Maw Maw was a gift to television.
