Such rich imagery. I noticed how much the 'fuck it' part of me was stirred, and was amazed by a recollection of how much of me it used to occupy. I didn't even realise how much I'd missed it. Fuck Monday. Stepping into the darkness and the mystery of the tent for the win. (And I would LOVE to hear you read a piece)
The transience of despair, hope - of all things. When I hear of someone killing themself I always think "if only they had waited a little longer" because life has a way of placing something in your path that saves, or at least diverts you from that supreme act of resistance against life's random chaos.
Beautiful piece. I love the economical way you flesh out the character with fragments of information. By the end the person is standing in front of the reader in 3D and technicolor!
Thanks Jules. I actually just read this as a reader for the first time. It's an interesting piece, and I didn't cringe like I thought I would (I never read my writing). I like that you've had that reflection "if only they'd waited..", and in a way, that's what "I'll do it on Monday" is. It's the protagonist waiting. Like when we say "I'll start my diet on Monday". Monday never comes. Monday is also a reference to the Boomtown Rats. I loved and still love "I don't like Mondays". It was a great moment in music history.
It's great to get the background to that "Monday" reference. I remember the Rats being at no. 1 in the UK charts in the late 1970s. Those were the days when pop music was interesting - to be able to have a no. 1 hit with a song with such a controversial subject!
I do re-read my old stuff but I usually want to edit it again so I should probably take a leaf out of your book.
Yes, weird music in the charts. Think of Adam and the Ants. I was hooked. But that shit is wild. Listen to Ant Music now with it's strange timing, whistling, and it's just all over the place. I loved it.
I was never that keen on Adam and the Ants at the time but retrospectively I appreciate bands like that a little more. At least they had something individual going on, and the music was competent. That counts for a lot. Also, I was impressed that the British actress Diana Dors was in the video for Prince Charming. That gave it some cachet for me!

You are very kind. I'm feeling fuck Monday right now, at 9.52pm on a sunday.
Monday can truly fuck all the way off

Well I did not know that.
